EMPHASIS IN SCIENCE

This emphasis is designed to train the student in those areas of mathematics that may be applied to formulate and solve problems in other disciplines. The program is designed to qualify the student for employment as an applied mathematician, but the graduate would be well qualified for graduate study in pure or applied mathematics. The requirements include courses in statistics, computer programming and both theoretical and applied mathematics. The student also takes at least 12 units of a science in order to acquire some knowledge of a field to which mathematics can be applied. This will provide a good background for employment or for graduate work in applied mathematics or in that science. For example, a math major with 4 upper division courses in Economics would be able to pursue graduate work in Economics.

Preparation for the Major

Three semesters of Calculus (Math 150,151 and 252); Math Software Workshop (Math 241); Discrete Mathematics (Math 245); Linear Algebra (Math 254); Introduction to Computer Programming (CS 107); Statistical Principles and Practices (Stat250) for a total of 26 units. Some lower division courses will probably be prerequisite to science courses applied to the major.

Major

A minimum of 36 upper division units to include Math 337 (Elementary Differential Equations), Math 524 (Linear Algebra), Math 534A (Adv Calc I), Math 534B (Adv Calc II); at least six units slected from Math 521A (Abstract Algebra), Math 525 (Topology), Math 531(Partial Differential Equations), Math 532 (Complex Variables), Math 537(Differential Equations); 12 units from a science to which mathematics may be applied (these should be from a single science and must be approved by the B.S. adviser); and six units of electives in computer science, mathematics, or statistics. Students must complete an outline for the major and file a copy signed by an adviser with the Office of the Registrar.
