| Education Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics (1987), University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA M.A. in Applied Mathematics (1985), University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics (1982), Nanjing University of Science and Technology, China Research interest I am an applied mathematician with research interests in statistical climatology and nonlinear waves. My group is working on a variety of research projects, including statistical optimal averaging and interpolation of climate parameters, error estimation in climate data analysis, development of agroclimate datasets and drought monitoring, optimal blending of satellite remote sensing data with in situ observations, weather risk analysis and statistical decision theory, Hilbert-Huang signal analysis for nonlinear and non-stationary processes, climate informatics, internal and surface waves in water flows over a topography, and nonlinear evolution equations and solitons. Together with Gerald North and K.-Y. Kim, we established a spectral theory to estimate the sampling errors in the average of an inhomogeneous field. The United Nations' Inter-governmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) adopted our theory to estimate the uncertainties in global warming assessment from 1861 to 2000 (IPCC Report 2001, Figures 2.7 and 2.8). My research
projects have been supported by many agencies, including US National Aeronautics
and Space Administration, US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration,
US National Research Council, Canadian Natural Sciences and Engineering
Research Council, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Environment Canada,
